Michael Grinder

Michael Grinder is a master of, and world-renowned expert in the power of influence — the science of non-verbal intelligence, non-verbal communication, non-verbal leadership, group dynamics, advanced relationship building skills and presentation skills.

Michael gained a Masters Degree at Loyola University, a Master of Arts (Education) degree at Holy Names College and a Bachelor of Arts (Music) degree at the University of Oregon.

Following university, Michael built a highly successful career as a schoolteacher. It was during this period that he discovered the relationship between non-verbal communication and the effectiveness of learning. Consequently, he conducted research and analysis on the gestures, body language, eye contact and voice patterns of several groups of teachers. As a result, he detected and defined 21 distinctive behavioural patterns that give meaning and structure to the whole concept of Non-Verbal Intelligence.

In 1981, Michael founded MGA, an organisation focussed on the provision of training in non-verbal communication, group dynamics and influencing skills for school districts, corporations and individuals. Today, MGA is a global leader.

Michael has spoken at conferences and conducted seminars on his areas of expertise all over the world. And for many years, he has been acknowledged as America’s educator of educators. Michael’s training programmes have transformed the standards of teaching and learning in many schools. He has also enabled business leaders, senior managers and business owners to excel in their chosen fields.

Working in both the corporate world and within schools, with consultants, trainers and educators, Michael is dedicated to the concept that whilst we are all in love with the influence of power, we should really be in love with the power of influence.

Michael teaches others how to use influence verbally and non-verbally. If a person manages for the sole outcome of gaining compliance then they are operating from power, not from influence. The power template is short-term, focuses on the issue level of the communication and is results-oriented. Whereas, influence is longer term, focuses on the relationship level of the communication and is more process-oriented.

Michael has spent his life studying, dissecting and teaching the complexity that underlies all communication. He has developed a unique, new science of influence through non-verbal communication. It is rich in practical skills that can transform and improve all professional and personal relationships across cultures.

Michael is the pioneer in teaching others how to perceive non-verbal communication in a group setting. He was personally trained by two well-known experts in the field of communication; his brother Dr. John Grinder, co-founder of Neuro Linguistic Programming and Carl Rogers, the wellspring of rapport and relationships.

Michael’s engaging style and humorous delivery makes learning both fun and long lasting.
